Welcome to Star Citizen Alpha 2.6.1! While this patch is primarily dedicated to bug fixes targeting Star Marine, Arena Commander and Crusader, it also includes a number of “quality of life” improvements for the game, updates to Spectator Mode, new implementations of our continuing network code updates, a brand new version of the Super Hornet and the first implementation of our Multi-Region Server Support.

Your launcher should show “2.6.1-506099” as the client version. It is strongly recommended that players delete their USER folder for the LIVE client after patching, particularly if you start encountering any odd character graphical issues or crash on loading. The USER folder can be found (in default installations) at C:\Program Files\Cloud Imperium Games\StarCitizen\Public.

No Matter Where You Go, There You Are

Groundwork aspects of our ongoing network refactor have come online – the first iteration of Network Message Ordering.

Strictly Ordered Network Messaging moves the game away from our previous client-server handling of networked objects, over to our new token system with a strict priority system for managing messaging between client and server nodes.

Multi-Region Servers

We now have servers available in the US, Europe and Australia!

You can choose what region you would like to connect to via an optional drop-down, when connecting to any multiplayer instance.

Selecting “All” will currently default to the best available region, but that will change as we build and improve on the functionality of our region support.

Mega Map

The new Mega Map system allows for much quicker loading time when switching between maps. In this initial release it will only be enabled for single player maps (Hangars and single-player Arena Commander), but we will be expanding this to include multiplayer maps in a future release.

To unify scoring with Star Marine, player kills are now scored separately to Vehicle Damage, while revenge kills and Resurgence awards have been removed from Arena Commander for the moment. We’ve also lowered the spawn rate of pirates in Pirate Swarm slightly to provide a less drastic difficulty curve as you progress while improving the weapons issued to the Aces in Pirate Swarm mode.

Additionally, the number of missiles and countermeasures awarded from pickups in Arena Commander game modes have been lowered, while changes have been made to better balance the modes now that repair and restock pickups are available in the game mode. With this, only currently dead players will be resurrected after a boss wave in Multiplayer Pirate or Vanduul Swarm. No additional lives will be provided.

In-match loadout customization is now implemented. During a Star Marine match, while your character is dead, you will have the option to change out your loadout before respawning. FPS weapons have received a balance pass to improve viability, a +25 Haemorrhage scoring bonus has been added for causing another player to bleed, but watch out: this bonus is not awarded if you cause yourself to bleed.

Multiple changes have been made to both OP Station Demien and Echo Eleven maps to help prevent spawn camping and balance times between control points, plug up some exploits, and add additional dialog lines during matches.

This is a Totally New Super Hornet

The revamped Super Hornet has arrived.

Following in the footsteps of the F7C, Ghost and Tracker, the F7C-M Super Hornet has been updated with the latest technological advancements made throughout Star Citizen’s continued development. The new version of the Super Hornet replaces the existing F7C-M and contains important updates to support both current and future game systems (such as Items 2.0.)

The closest to the Military load-out as is commercially possible for a civilian model, the F7C-M Super Hornet reattaches the ball turret from the UEE’s F7A Hornet and offers near-milspec parts under the hood. Proving that two heads are better than one, a second seat has been added to split the logistic and combat duty, making the Super Hornet a truly terrifying ship to engage.

The Future of Spectrum

Spectrum is still in development, and it should not be considered complete. This release is just step 1 in the global release of Spectrum, and we’ll keep improving it with your help to add new functionalities and iron out bugs. We will make sure this process is as transparent as can be, and to that aim, we’re releasing a new module in the Issue Council where anyone can submit their own tickets or review anyone else’s. You can also read the Spectrum FAQ to find out more about the global communication platform transition.

Future releases of spectrum will include voice chat, a desktop application, a mobile app (android, iOS and possibly windows), and in-game integration through overlay.

• Emoji list is missing Unicode 9 latest updates (No avocado or salt shaker WHAT!)
• On mobile, the message input closes when you type. It’s bad. We’re on it!
• On mobile, the lobby presence list defaults to displayed, it’s annoying!
• We’re hunting a bug where sometimes private lobby unread “count” resets.

Nothing keeps the fire burning like… thousands of tonnes of hydrogen. The Starfarer Gemini is the military variant of the famous tanker and one of the largest ships currently available in Crusader. The Gemini has plenty of room for you and your significant other to spread out… or for that family on the drift. Just keep the kids away from the missile launcher.

The G2M Gemini, more commonly the Starfarer Gemini or ‘Star G,’ trades some cargo capacity and maneuverability in exchange for reinforced armor, increased shielding, more powerful engines and stronger versions of the three manned turrets. The Gemini also includes an optional missile pod, which can be swapped for the fuel intake unit on the ship’s nose.

Another week, another This Week in Star Citizen.

Chris is back in the LA office from his trip overseas to Foundries 42 UK and DE, so you can expect to see him back to hosting Around the Verse this week.

In current events, you may have noticed that Alpha 2.6.1 is now available to all backers on the PTU. This is a “big” little patch, in that beyond lots of quality of life bug fixes from our 2.6 release at the end of last year, it also introduced one of our most requested features: regional servers! This is an important step on the road to improved performance for all Star Citizen, and it excites me to think about what’s ahead when the Megamap combines with the “Star Network” and all the subsequent awesomeness that comes after that. Exciting times lay ahead for Star Citizen, to be certain.

But let’s not get too far ahead of ourselves, and take a look at what’s coming this week in Star Citizen.

By the time you read this, Citizens of the Stars will have been released on Monday. It features a fun Quantum Questions with Senior Producer Jake Ross from our Austin, TX studio, a look at the collected works of TheNOOBIFIER1337 in this week’s Citizen Spotlight, and a new irregular segment called “Subconscious” with Subscription Manager Alexis Lesnick that will cover all the great things Subscribers are getting each month. I’ll give you one guess as to who named that segment, and if you guess anyone other than Ben Lesnick, you should be ashamed of yourself.

Tuesday not only brings us another entry in our weekly Lore Post series, but it’s also VALENTINE’S DAY and to celebrate, we thought we’d do something a little fun. Be sure to check back here on Tuesday to discover the details of our first-ever Valentine’s Day ship sale. I’ll give you a hint: think ships for two…

Wednesday brings us another episode of Bugsmashers with Mark Abent. I don’t want to spoil it for you, but at the beginning, there’s a bug, and by the end, Mark has smashed the bug. It’s good stuff… I kid, but Bugsmashers is one of my absolute favorite things we put out. It’s a real, no kid gloves, behind-the-scenes look at actual game development, and I learn something with each and every episode. If you’ve never checked it out, I’d encourage you to give it a shot sometime and see something genuinely different.

Thursday is Around the Verse Day in the Star Citizen universe, and we’ve got some fun stuff cooking. Remember, that where our other shows may be fun or informative looks at various aspects of the community, development and game, you’ll always find the meatiest of developmental updates on Around the Verse every Thursday.

Finally on Friday we’ve got one more Happy Hour for ya. It’s your chance to hang out and play the game with some CIG developers and staff, and maybe ask some questions along the way. This Friday we’ll be playing the new Alpha 2.6.1, so if you’d like to play with us, be sure you update your clients! Whether the patch is on PTU or LIVE when this Friday comes, don’t miss your chance to hang out and have some fun with the staff.

Loganawe was able to take a concept picture of the Sabre cockpit and make a few adjustments to create a dramatic wallpaper that really shows off the aggressiveness and detail of the Aegis Sabre. This has long been one of my favorites pictures on our website, and the adjustments from Loganawe makes me love it even more.

Can you believe it’s already February? January was a month of hard work preparing Star Citizen Alpha 2.6.1 and Spectrum for launch… and it was a month of epic contributions from our incredible community. If you have not been keeping up, I highly encourage you to head over and check out all of the amazing content that has been submitted to the Community Hub.

So what’s going on this week?

Monday brings us the second episode of Citizens of the Stars, our new weekly program exclusively about our favorite part of the Star Citizen Universe, YOU! Does Character Artist Jeremiah Lee take the trophy from Ben Lesnick in another segment of Quantum Questions? You’ll have to watch to find out.

On Tuesday, the Lore team regales us with another installment in one of their many continuing series. One of my favorite things that come from these lore posts is the community voice-over renditions that inevitably follow.

We are always excited when we see cosplay submissions on the Community Hub. Ben Valkyre created an album of his first flight suit and armor for Star Citizen using “EVA foam mats and lots of glue.” His flight suit looks great, and we eagerly await what he will come up with next!

Greetings Citizens,

What. A. Week! A handful of us traveled to San Antonio, TX to attend PAX South and a Bar Citizen event organized by the community. We had a great time, and were honestly shocked by the amount of passion, support, and energy that you all provided us during our visit. The feeling in the air was electric! These events really recharge the ole battery for us, and we are more hyped than ever to be back in the studio today, working to deliver great content for all of you! Big shout-out to Gany and Jorunn for organizing this event, pushing the Bar Citizen movement, and building a level of camaraderie unparalleled in gaming.

So, what’s going on this week?

Monday introduces Citizens of the Stars, our new weekly program exclusively about you, the Star Citizen Community. Citizens of the Stars not only highlights the contributions of our community, but also puts a developer in the hot-seat for a round of Quantum Questions, which addresses some fun facts about the developer and the game. Whether through bug reports on the issue council, feedback on the forums, or the creation of content inspired by the game, Star Citizen is only possible because of the community.

On Tuesday, the Lore Team is back at it again with another installment in one of their many continuing series. If you’re interested in the narrative that will bring the Star Citizen Universe to life, you’ll want to check these out. You can also browse previous posts here.

On Wednesday, we check in with the man who fears no creature, the resounding champion of pest control, the smasher of all things bugs, Mark “Bugsmasher” Abent! Make sure to tune in to watch another bug get smashed, and take a detailed look at one of the many hurdles involved in game development.

Thursday. Prepare your F5 keys for the first Around the Verse episode of February, where we take an inside look at the on-going development of Star Citizen! These episodes grant us a great opportunity to peek behind closed doors, deep-dive the complexity that is game development, and get to know the people working tirelessly on the project behind the scenes.

EP:61:12 : “Economic Imbalance …”

ERIA QUINT: Hello and welcome to Showdown, the political program that tackles pressing issues from different perspectives. I’m your host, Eria Quint. Today, we examine a recent report from the Senate Committee on Interstellar Commerce (CIC) that highlights the increasing economic disparity around the Empire. Though UEE prosperity reaches far and wide, there are still far too many that struggle to eke out a living.

Various government programs and non-governmental organizations have tried and failed to properly address this issue, leaving many to wonder if careful orchestration between private and public sectors is what’s really needed to raise the living standard for billions around the Empire.

My first guest has spent much of her career dealing directly with these issues. Senator Octavia Beate represents the Ferron System, which has known its fair share of economic hardships, and is a senior member on the Senate committee that released the report. Senator Beate, we appreciate you taking the time out of your busy schedule.

SENATOR OCTAVIA BEATE: Of course. The government is doing a lot of good work on this issue that goes unnoticed. Glad to be here to outline some of the actions we’ve taken.

ERIA QUINT: And offering a perspective from the private sector, we have with us Kavan Aarset, the CEO of Economic Advancement for All (EAA), an NGO focused on ensuring economic equality. Welcome, Kavan.

KAVAN AARSET: Looking forward to a spirited discussion on a problem we can all agree deserves more attention.

ERIA QUINT: Let’s start with you, Senator Beate. It’s been about one hundred years since most major mining operations abandoned the Ferron System. A move that your planet is still reeling from. The report from the CIC claims that two-thirds of the system’s residents are unhappy with their current economic condition. What does the government need to do to provide your constituents with more economic opportunities?

SENATOR OCTAVIA BEATE: The unfortunate truth is that this issue isn’t isolated to Ferron. This issue affects people everywhere from Hyperion to the blocks of Terra. There are billions in the Empire that are in need and the government has to be creative to try and change things. A problem of this magnitude demands an equally big solution.

ERIA QUINT: Are there any “big solutions” that you’ve found to be particularly effective?

SENATOR OCTAVIA BEATE: Absolutely. I’ve been an outspoken supporter of large-scale military and infrasture expenditures. Projects like the Retribution and Synthworld require resources and labor from across the Empire. These government expenditures not only generate economic growth that trickles down to the people who need it most, but also help improve and protect the fabric of the Empire that we all hold so dear.

ERIA QUINT: Mr. Aarset, how would an NGO like the EAA address the economic dissatisfaction in Ferron?

KAVAN AARSET: Not with platitudes, which is unfortunately so often how Senator Beate chooses to respond. This is an issue -

SENATOR OCTAVIA BEATE: I beg your pardon.

KAVAN AARSET: These so-called “big solutions” only serve as a bandage. To really address the root of the issue, we need to take specific action based on the careful examination of a system’s population, economy, resources, infrastructure and a myriad of other factors. Solutions must be tailored to the individual system to guarantee results. So that’s what we’d focus on first and foremost; truly understanding the people we’re trying to help.

SENATOR OCTAVIA BEATE: Mr. Aarset’s goal of personally diagnosing and addressing the specific issues of every system is, well, it’s an admirable mission, but also an infeasible one. Not even the UEE government can accomplish it, which is why we instead do reports like the one just released.

The people of the UEE need help now. These people need jobs and opportunities; not to be the subject of another academic research paper. That’s why I’ve worked hard to direct government resources to these disadvantaged systems, and to do it now.

ERIA QUINT: Mr. Aarset, what specific actions has the EAA taken to help those being left behind?

KAVAN AARSET: We have a strict policy that any credits spent in a system must go directly to local businesses. The problem with Senator Beate’s massive spending plans are that they’re nothing more than a huge payday for mega-corporations. A small, family run company in Ferron doesn’t stand a chance of landing a Synthworld contract when up against multi-system conglomerates like Shubin or ArcCorp.

SENATOR OCTAVIA BEATE: Mr. Aarset is being deceptive here. He knows that most of these massive projects require large corporations to hire local contractors and mercs. That pumps a huge amount of credits into the local economy. That’s in addition to all the credits their workers spend in the system going out to eat or catching a game at the local Sataball arena.

ERIA QUINT: Let’s move on. Also included in the report was a list of systems in need of the most economic help. The list is strikingly similar—

KAVAN AARSET: I’m sorry, Eria, but mega-corps hiring contractors isn’t a recipe for economic success for those most in need. It only makes the economic disparity worse. You don’t need to look any further than the planet of Hurston to see an example of this.

A recent investigation by the Terra Gazette revealed the insultingly low pay and deplorable conditions contract workers on Hurston experience. Large corporations like Hurston are interested in their bottom line; not in helping the economically underserved. Actually, it’s in their interest to keep wages depressed, so they can hold onto a greater percentage of the profits.

SENATOR OCTAVIA BEATE: Using Hurston as an example is nothing more than a red herring. As we all know, the planet of Hurston is owned by the corporation and completely under their control with its own labor laws, rules and regulations. I may not agree with all of their policies, but the company is well within their rights to govern their planet as long as they adhere to the Common Laws of the UEE.

KAVAN AARSET: Which haven’t been updated in how long?

SENATOR OCTAVIA BEATE: If contractors on Hurston aren’t happy with their pay, living conditions or whatever else, it’s completely within their rights to move someplace else.

KAVAN AARSET: Except many of them can’t afford to because of the suppressed wages and the strong arm tactics of local company security. The last military expenditure Senator Beate advocated for included billions in contracts that were awarded to Hurston, so don’t go saying there’s nothing the government can do to apply pressure. Denying government contracts to companies that treat their workers inhumanely would be a great place to start.

ERIA QUINT: This is a fascinating discussion, but we need to take a quick commercial break. When we return, I’ll challenge Senator Beate and Kavan Aarset to set their ideological differences aside, and see if they can agree on a way the public and private sectors can work together to help those that are economically disadvantaged.

Now that the 2.6.1 schedule is out, we are moving forward and focusing on making 2017 an epic year! It’s pretty busy around here while development focuses on the major milestones being laid out. If you have not seen the updated production schedule – you can check check it out here!

For the Community Team, we are also preparing, refining, and building processes to ensure we are best equipped to be able to deliver interesting content to all of you. In the coming weeks we’ll be premiering a fun show that focuses on highlighting one of our favorite aspects of the Star Citizen Universe: YOU! No, not you. YOU. Yes, YOU! Stay tuned for more information on that soon.

With that, let’s take a look at this week!

On Tuesday, the Lore Team will release another installment in one of their many continuing series. The Star Citizen Universe is rich with history and a past/future worth exploring. 2017 is certainly in full swing. In Los Angeles, we’ve been hosting a number of folks from studios around the world in our traditional “beginning-of-the-year” summits where we plot out many of the project milestones for the year. It’s always terrific to see the people you spend so much time with over Skype and email in person, and the value of these face-to-face meetings can’t be overstated. We’ve got some exciting plans for 2017 certainly, and you’ll learn more about them in upcoming episodes of Around the Verse.

For the Community Team, we’re making preparations now for attending PAX South. While there is no formal presentation this year, Community Managers Tyler Witkin and Jared Huckaby are attending as fans, as well as many members of the CIG Austin team that will be in attendance to meet up with members of the Star Citizen community and enjoy all that these tremendously fun events have to offer, including a local Bar Citizen. With that, let’s take a look at what this week has in store.

Each Tuesday, the Lore Team releases another installment in one of their many continuing series. These lore posts have been a tradition since Star Citizen was first announced, and if you haven’t checked out some of the older series, like the Tales of Kid Crimson, you can find all the previous entries here.

This Tuesday also brings with us a special treat: another Subscriber’s Town Hall, this time focused on the Persistent Universe with special guests Chris Roberts, Erin Roberts, Tony Zurovec and Todd Papy. Due to the scheduling of our 2017 summits, this edition will be pre-taped with questions collected from our Subscriber’s Den last week, so don’t miss your next chance to hear many of the latest updates on our Persistent Universe development.

On Wednesdays, we alternate between the death and destruction of bugs everywhere with episodes of our edutainment series, Bugsmashers! and The Loremaker’s Guide to the Galaxy, where members of the CIG Lore Team explore the design, story and science of one of Star Citizen’s planetary systems. For this week, it’s Senior Gameplay Engineer Mark Abent doing what he does best in Bugsmashers.

Around the Verse, our flagship weekly program comes to us every Thursday, and after last week’s Special Edition look at the Vanduul and Xi’an languages, we return to form with our first full episode of 2017. If you’re looking for all the latest development news on Star Citizen, you don’t want to miss out on Around the Verse, every week on our YouTube channel.

Last Friday, we kicked off the Star Citizen Happy Hour. We were excited to carve out a small stitch of time every week to play the game we work so hard on, and share that experience not only with you, but with our community streamers as well. If you tuned in, you saw that we certainly needed the practice, as Senior Producer Alex Marschal and Design Director Todd Papy stopped by not only to answer questions and give insight into Star Marine’s future, but ridicule Jared for his l33t skillz. While every week won’t have special guests that can swing by in this regard, it’s safe to say you never know who will stop by.
